“Very happy I was referred by my friend who also has a child with anxiety at the dentist. They are very friendly and seemed very experienced with dealing with children that have this issue. My child stayed comfortable and happy throughout his check up. Definitely recommend this place for parents with such issues with their children.”

Dental injuries and emergencies can be stressful for both children and their parents, and unfortunately, they are quite common. Approximately one-third of children will experience some form of dental trauma, often during their early years. Children are particularly vulnerable to dental injuries during two key stages: toddlerhood (ages 18-40 months), when they are exploring their surroundings, and during preadolescence and adolescence, when sports-related injuries become more frequent. Here’s an overview of some of the most common dental emergencies in children, along with helpful tips for managing them.

Toothache

Tooth pain in children can arise from various causes, including decay, injury, infection, or the loss of a permanent tooth. These issues may result from sports activities or missed dental check-ups. If your child is experiencing a toothache, our emergency dentist in Buckeye, AZ, can help identify the source of the discomfort, whether it’s related to the tooth, root, or nerve.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child experiences a traumatic tooth loss, contact our office immediately. For a baby tooth, place it in a cup of milk and call us right away. If an adult tooth is knocked out, time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part) and come to our office as quickly as possible. If a tooth is intruded or displaced, please reach out for an evaluation.

Fractured Crown

The crown, which is the visible part of the tooth, is often susceptible to trauma. Fractures can vary from minor cracks that may not require urgent care to more serious cases where the exposed pulp necessitates immediate attention. A pediatric dentist can assess the severity of the fracture with dental X-rays. Any color changes in the tooth, such as pink or yellow, are warning signs that require prompt care. Minor fractures may be treated with dental sealants, while severe fractures might need pulp treatments. If a crown fracture occurs, contact a pediatric dentist as soon as possible to prevent further irritation or infection.

Root Fracture

Fractured teeth are common among children. Signs of a root fracture may include displaced teeth or reduced sensitivity to cold. Trauma can damage the nerve, leading to sensitivity even with light pressure.

Dental Concussion

Dental concussions can affect children of any age and often result in temporary or permanent discoloration of the teeth. If the teeth remain bright and don’t turn black, the situation may not be serious. However, immediate evaluation is essential if discoloration occurs, as it could indicate that the tooth is dying and may require a root canal to address infected nerves.

Soft Tissue Injuries

If your child accidentally bites their tongue, lip, or cheek, prompt treatment is crucial to minimize the risk of infection. Our pediatric emergency dentist can provide immediate care for these injuries, evaluating for bleeding or swelling to determine the best course of action. In cases where the bite involves the flap under the upper lip, a visit to the emergency room may be necessary.

Jaw Fracture

Jaw fractures in young patients can occur due to slips, falls, or contact sports. If your child experiences severe pain in the teeth, chin, or jaw, and has difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking, it is vital to seek immediate dental care.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Dental trauma can accompany head injuries, which can be confusing and concerning for parents. It’s crucial to seek immediate care from a pediatric emergency dentist to ensure your child’s oral health and long-term well-being.
