Fluoride and Your Child
Parenting is a tough job, with many balls to juggle. Each parent has to ensure their child is nurtured, socialized, eats nutritiously, educated well, and sees the doctor regularly. Oral hygiene for kids can be an important priority for parents, but one thing can help keep their teeth strong and healthy: fluoride. Learning about fluoride and your child can help inform you on some common questions you may have, and bring you up to speed on what you need to know.

How Much Fluoride Does My Child Need?

Consulting with your dentist on your child’s fluoride intake is the best way to determine how much fluoride your child should use in a day. It is not wise to give them many sources of fluoride all at once, but to focus on one that works for your child’s needs. Asking your dentist what approach they recommend is best. This could include in office fluoride treatments, fluoride tablets, fluoridated toothpaste (depending on your child’s age) or fluoridated water. Your dentist may be able to ask a few questions to help you determine how much fluoride your child is already using, and whether or not an additional source is necessary.

What are Good Sources of Fluoride?

Fluoridated water is an easy resource, and many cities fluoridate the water. You can ask at your local government office to find out if your water is fluoridated or not. If you have a well, it is more likely your water is not fluoridated.
Even if your water isn’t fluoridated some other good sources of fluoride can include- fluoride tablets, fluoridated dental products such as toothpaste or mouthwash, bottled fluoridated water, and fluoride treatments at the dentist.

Can my Child Have Too Much Fluoride?

Using too much fluoride can lead to fluorosis, and fluoride is not safe to consume in large amounts. Do check in with your dentist if you are concerned about your child’s fluoride intake, and how to properly manage that.
