If you have a newborn at home, you have a lot to think about.  You want to make sure that your baby’s happy and healthy as she develops and you might be wondering about her baby teeth; when they’re going to start coming in and what to do about her teething symptoms.

Taking your child to an infant dentist can ensure that her teeth are developing normally.  A baby dentist can also give you lots of information on how to instill great oral care habits in your child early on!

Your child’s teeth actually start developing before birth, but don’t typically start appearing in her mouth until about the six-month mark.  This process can take up to two and a half years, but it is recommended that you take your baby to the pediatric dentist before her first birthday.

Although the first visit is mostly about orientation, here are some key points that your Phoenix pediatric dentist will talk to you about:

  • How to care for your baby’s mouth

  • Proper use of fluoride to prevent childhood cavities

  • What to do about oral habits, such as finger and thumb sucking

  • Ways to prevent accidents that could damage the face and teeth

  • Teething and other milestones of development

  • The link between your child’s diet and oral health

Although some parents opt to take their child to a family dentist, a pediatric dentist in Arizona is specially geared towards young patients.  On top of four years of dental school, a pediatric dentist undergoes two additional years of residency that involves working with children, teens and children with special needs.  Also, since your infant dentist has kids in the office every single day, the office staff has lots of experience with making sure your child is comfortable throughout the exam.  If it’s time for your baby’s first exam, make an appointment today!
