Beautiful Woman Covers Mouth with HandThere are several causes for the discoloration of teeth. Here are the major culprits for yellowing teeth!

Food & Drink

Various foods can stain your teeth with varying degrees of discoloration. The best way to prevent stains to brush immediately after completing a meal.  Foods that can stain your teeth include,

  • Black Tea
  • Coffee
  • Soda
  • Sports Drinks (Gatorade)
  • Sugary Candy
  • Red Wine
  • White Wine
  • Curries
  • Soy Sauce
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Sugary fruit juice

Try consuming these foods in moderation and always brush every day!

Smoking/Tobacco

Smoking is a bad habit all across the board in terms of your overall health but it is also a huge contributing factor to yellowing teeth. Chewing tobacco or “dip” can be just as damaging for your perfect, pearly white smile.

Poor Dental Hygiene

No surprises here! The biggest cause of discoloration of a tooth’s enamel is poor dental hygiene. As we always say you will need to stay diligent with your home care by brushing twice a day and flossing every day.
You should visit your dentist at least twice a year. These appointments are necessary to access your oral health as well as aesthetic purposes.

Medications

Antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline are known to discolor the teeth of children who are still developing teeth. Mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium as also known to stain teeth.

Age

As you grow older the outer layer of your enamel gets worn, away revealing the yellow color of dentin.

How Do I Remedy Yellowing Teeth?

There are several options for curing yellow teeth. The most effective is to come into the office for a bleaching procedure which takes only a couple hours and provides immediate results. There are several other at-home options as well including whitening strips, and gel trays.
